World Stroke Day is observed on October 29 to underscore the serious nature and high rates of stroke, raise awareness of the prevention and treatment of the condition, and ensure better care and support for survivors.
The annual event was started in 2006 by the World Stroke Organization and the WSO declared stroke a public health emergency in 2010.
The World Stroke Campaign’s goodwill ambassadors include Indian Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, former Miss Egypt Dalia El Behery, and cyclist Alberto Contador.
Stroke:
Stroke has been and continues to be a widespread disease worldwide, afflicting over 15 million people each year. Of those 15 million, almost 6 million die, and a further five million are left permanently disabled. A new person suffers a stroke in every six seconds.
Signs, Causes, and Treatment of Stroke:
A stroke refers to a lack of blood supply to parts of the brain, which causes brain cells to die or leads to extensive damage. It can affect mobility and speech, among other aspects.
One of the key factors that minimize the damage is early detection. Watch out for certain signs that indicate a potential stroke: Is one side drooping?
Are the arms of one side weaker than the other?
Is the speech slurred?
If you see any of these signs, then immediately connect with a medical expert.
– †Strokes are treatable if detected in time. If you treat it as an emergency and head to the stroke unit, the damage from the stroke can be minimizedâ€- Dr. Jayanti Gurumukhani, Neurologist: Jay Neurocare and Physiotherapy Clinic, Bhavnagar.
The usual form of treatment includes clot-busting drugs that break blood clots. If given earlier, it shows benefits. There are greater chances of another stroke among survivors.
